Large Louis XV wall-mounted cartel in wood and Martin* varnish with floral decoration on a green background, finely chased ormolu ornamentation with birds, arabesques and vegetal scrolls, enamel cartouche dial with Roman and Arabic numerals signed J. Gudin in Paris, accompanied by a bas-de-lampe decorated with a scene of a wolf watching a sheep, late 19th century.
This cartel is in good condition and is highly decorative due to its large size. We have its pendulum and key. It is in working order, but may need to be overhauled.
Please note: the back of the base has been reinforced, a pane of glass is missing on one side, some minor wear and tear, please look at the photos.
*Martin varnish:
In 1728, the Martin brothers of Paris developed a copal-based imitation lacquer, Martin varnish, to compete with Chinese and Japanese lacquers. This varnish, less costly for furniture decoration than the application of lacquer panels, was also used to harmonize furniture with a pronounced curvature, as lacquer panels could not tolerate being too rounded. Martin varnish was used to join these panels together so that the furniture was visually homogeneous. It did, however, have a life of its own, reproducing and interpreting works by painters of the period applied to furniture as decoration. Martin varnish was also used on period furniture in the 19th century.
