A spectacular clock, nearly a meter high, in patinated bronze and chased gilded bronze, illustrating one of the famous episodes from Ovid's Metamorphoses: Perseus delivering Andromeda.
The two main characters are shown at the crucial moment when Perseus arrives, deposited by Pegasus, on the rock to which Andromeda is chained. The latter, with their extremely fine chasing, are in bronze with a medallion-brown patina, certainly from the production of Pierre-Philippe Thomire.

This perfect execution of the smallest details allows the viewer to feel Andromeda's profound relief as she abandons herself to a devoted Percée.

The whole piece rests on a large base highlighted by a wide frieze of water leaves, acanthus leaves and olive scrolls in gilded bronze.
The two front feet take the shape of the Kraken, a mythological sea monster, to complete the representation.

Rare for its subject and size, this very large clock is also rare for its quality of execution.

An identical clock, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, sold at Christie's 29.10.1993.

    Very good condition.
Beautiful wire movement, typical of the late 18th century, in perfect working order, overhauled by an art watchmaker.

    The myth :
that of Cassiopeia, Queen of Ethiopia.
Cassiopeia proclaimed herself to be superior in beauty to the Nereids, thus arousing their anger. They appealed to Poseidon who, to defend their honor, sent a sea monster to ravage the south of the country.
Only the sacrifice of Andromeda, daughter of Cassiopeia, could stop it. Perseus, who had fallen in love with the princess, proposed to her parents, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, to free her from the monster in exchange for her hand in marriage.
