Louis XVI period clock in chased and mercury-gilt bronze, matte and polished, white marble, and turquoise blue marble. Parisian work from the Louis XVI period, early 1780s. The dial is signed by Couturier in Paris (Etienne Claude Couturier, master clockmaker in 1768).
The clock is an allegory: it represents the temple of Blind Love, the guardian of Time. Time is depicted blindfolded shooting an arrow; it is sheltered beneath an antique temple, perched on a terrace, framed by two columns with Corinthian capitals and cascades of flowers. On the upper terrace, encircled by a gilt bronze balustrade, the openwork dial reveals a skeleton movement. This latter is a complication, indicating the hours and the dates (days of the month). At the top, a dove holds a wreath of flowers in its beak.
The clock is protected by a beautiful blown-glass bell resting on a gilded wooden base, the latter custom-made for this precious clock in the 19th century.
Excellent condition. The clock is complete and working. It will be sold after being serviced and cleaned by our clockmaker. It comes with its key.
