Rare large clock (61 cm) in finely chiseled gilt bronze decorated on top with the Crouching Venus*, model after the sculpture by Coysevox (Louvre Museum), dial with Roman numerals and laurel wreath surround surrounded by palmettes and foliage, sides also adorned with crowns, movement signed Devaulx** in Paris, from the 19th century Restoration period.
This clock is in very good condition and is of exceptional quality. It is very decorative due to its imposing size. The movement is signed Devaulx Paris (Rue du Palais Royal or Galerie de Valois 1830-1850, Extract from the Dictionary of French Watchmakers Tardy). It works, we have the key, the pendulum and the rear window.
After Antoine Coysevox (Lyon, 1640 - Paris, 1720). Venus, Roman goddess of love, squatting, protects her naked body from view. She sits on the back of a turtle, one of her usual attributes. Coysevox enlarges an antique model known by many copies. (see Louvre Museum).
A similar clock in patinated bronze and green marble is listed in the Collections du Mobilier National (from Château de Candé in Maine et Loire). Cf Dupuy-Baylet (Marie-France), "Clocks of the National Furniture 1800-1870", note 95.
A note: some small scratches and slight wear of the gilding especially on the back, see photos.
