Very rare model of Empire period clock with magnificently crafted details, attributed to the bronze maker, who in my opinion is one of the most gifted of his time, Pierre François Feuchère (1737-1823).
This spectacular gilded bronze clock of imposing size represents the hero Achilles in armor, spear in hand showing his troops the entrance to the temple of Apollo, at the gates of Troy.
Achilles, having just decapitated the statue of the sun god, removes his helmet and taunts the gods he has just defied.
The scene carved on the monument could suggest the episode where Thetis dips her son Achilles in the water of the Styx (the river of the underworld) to make him invulnerable, but this is not the case.
Indeed, this representation evokes the moment when, in order to verify their immortality, Thetis places all her children in a cauldron of boiling water. We see Peleus, coming to stop Thetis before she can subject the same fate to Achilles.
The central scene of the gilded bronze base describes the famous episode where Priam, king of Troy, comes to beg Achilles, leaning on a pedestal table with griffins, to return the body of Prince Hector to him for the funeral.
The urn with Patroclus' ashes is behind Priam.
On one side and the other of the base, the sword, the bow and the laurel wreath forming the attributes of the Hero.
The whole rests on four superb lion paws, dear to Pierre François Feuchère.
From the Directory to the end of the Empire period, he was the main competitor of Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Claude Galle, creating original and spectacular pieces for a very wealthy French and international clientele.
Four models of high-end clocks produced under the Empire bearing the image of the hero of Larissa: "Achilles swearing to avenge Patroclus", "Achilles and Agamemnon", "The death of Achilles" and "the Glory of Achilles ", this one is the rarest and is, to date, the only copy listed for sale.
