Rare late 18th century ormolu and patinated bronze clock in the form of a covered vase in which the dial is set. Capped by an ormolu lid decorated with a laurel-leaf frieze and pine-cone grip, the vase rises on four long, slender twisted stems ending in goat's hooves.
Faun heads on either side simulate handles.
A finely chased snake with arrowhead tongue decorates the front of the patinated bronze base. It is accompanied on each side by a leonine head. Gilded bronze counter-base set with a delicately fluted ring.
The ensemble rests on four raved feet.
In ancient Greece, the snake was the animal that protected the home. This position developed its symbolism of fertility and survival.
The origin of this symbolism lies in the snake on the caduceus of Asclepius, the god of medicine. Asclepius, revered by the Greeks for his power to raise the dead, was executed by Zeus.

    Very fine condition.
    Original mercury gilding.
Movement in perfect working order, overhauled by an expert watchmaker.
Complete with key and balance wheel.
    Directoire-Consulat period, circa 1795-1800
