    "Raphael the Painter" clock in gilded and patinated bronze, Restoration period, 19th century

    Dimensions: Height 48 cm, Width 36 cm, Depth 13 cm

    Superb and imposing clock in chiseled and gilded bronze (matte and shiny gold) with a dark brown patina, depicting the painter Raphael. Dressed in Renaissance clothing, he sits cross-legged and in profile on a rock and a scree, a pencil in his hand, absorbed in a sketch on a board – probably evoking the outline of his self-portrait. A palette and brushes are placed to his left, while to his right rests a roll of canvas depicting the Sistine Madonna.

    A beautiful dial with a silver patina, in excellent condition, blends harmoniously into the center of the rock. It features Roman numerals for the hours and a railway for the minutes, with a rim adorned with a delicate interlacing motif.

    The whole rests on a sumptuous rectangular multi-tiered base. A thick frieze encircles the base, richly decorated with appliques of stylized acanthus leaves and ovals containing allegories of the various arts of Music, Sculpture, and Painting. Rich volutes and moldings complete the ornamentation.

    The clock is supported by front feet carved with antique masks and Cerberus heads, embellished with rich gadrooned moldings and plant motifs.

    The figure's expression is full of life, powerful, and balanced.

    The bronze demonstrates remarkable craftsmanship and chiseled finish, enhanced with exceptional mercury gilding. Numerous parts make up the clock, and the assembly is of the highest quality.

    Clockwork: Original wire movement, overhauled, bearing the beautiful signature of Pons Horloger à Paris, Silver Medal 1823 (Tardy), a great clockmaker under the Empire, and signed Etablissement Gillion Paris. Paris. Numbered 809 on the movement plate and on the rear base, indicating a consistent and high-quality workmanship.
