Exceptional mercury-gilt bronze clock, allegorizing the Kingdom of France's maritime trade with the Levant, adorned with the profile of Louis XVI "protecting the Navy and the Freedom of Commerce". The dial features a sailboat with a bow decorated with the coat of arms of France, loaded with merchandise and bundles, a Turkish boatman holding an oar and presenting a chest full of spices, facing the Goddess of Fortune on a cornucopia, supporting a frame with the profile of the young Louis XVI and a scroll, a putti pulling a rope to haul up the anchor. The phylactery reads: "I sail at the mercy of fortune under the protection of the god Neptune". On the blackened wood counter-socle supported by four runners, reserves feature a frieze of acanthus leaves and rosette spandrels. The dial bears the signature of the Lorient watchmaker Poitevin, active in the years 1770-80. Together, these elements allow us to date this clock to the early Louis XVI period, circa 1775, in the so-called "Greek" style.
The structure of the clock, with its boat and figures, remains Louis XV, while the decoration of the base is in the à la grecque style, heralding the Louis XVI style. Our model is close to that in the former Doucet collection. We know of a case signed by Nicolas Bonnet with a movement by Metra, dated 1775. Another is reproduced in P.Kjellberg's L'encyclopedie de la pendule francaise (p. 270), with a profile of Louis XVI. Another variant exists with cannons arming the ship (cf. Vergoldete Bronzen, H.Ottomeyer et alii.). We have also sold a clock of this type with a white marble base and a profile of a Roman emperor: https://www.gslr-antiques.com/fr/boutique/pendules/pendule-lxv-allegorie-commerce-maritime.php
A very beautiful, spectacular and rare piece. The mercury gilding (of great depth) and the quality of the chasing are excellent. Our clock is probably the work of the famous bronze-maker Robert Osmond (the sailor figure is also used on an inkwell, circa 1755-1760).
Very good condition, original wire movement that seems to work. Complete with key. Fresh, well-preserved mercury gilding (slight localized wear on the edge of the waves). An overhaul will be necessary before installation.
