Tapestry and embroidery textile sheets on silk velvet.
- The richness of this work lies in its multiple techniques: silk velvet for the background, tapestry and embroidery for the motifs.
The background is a plain golden-beige silk velvet (now with some missing parts). The motifs on this background are of different origins. Most of the space is taken up by floral motifs in petit point tapestry (wool), slanted to the right, on cheesecloth canvas (hemp or linen). In the interstices, other elements have been deliberately added to embellish the whole: sewn trimmings (twisted silk cords), embroidered motifs (silk threads, flat-passed stitches).
Note the presence of an "AV" monogram in petit point tapestry on each of the bottom strips (on the right for one, on the left for the other). This work, partly made from a re-used tapestry (18th c.), was designed specifically to safeguard this tapestry, while at the same time offering a new decorative element thanks to the later addition of motifs (19th c.).
- Contrasts of color and material, and thus of relief, give this design a harmonious look. The colorful floral motifs stand out against the plain velvet background, which has the advantage of changing hue with the slightest movement, while the embroidery elements punctuate the decor with golden highlights. The combination of velvet, tapestry stitch and embroidery creates a beautiful decorative effect.
-Composite work. The silk velvet is missing, torn and worn.
