Large painted canvas from the 18th century, "the stop of a caravan at a well"

    - The scene represents a caravan of nomads and their mount stopping at a well. We see on the left a young woman, holding a jar to allow one of the kneeling travelers to drink while other men are busy unharnessing their camelids. In the distance, we can see a fortified town overlooked by a domed monument.

The border which frames the central scene (only the lower part is missing), completes the decoration by introducing ornamental motifs rich in details. Motifs, drawn from Western ornamental vocabulary (mascarons, shells, flower vases, a lambrequin arrangement for the upper part...), to blend in as best as possible with the interiors of the period. Thus, this painting follows a European fashion which emerged at the end of the 17th century, that of the imagery of distant countries while keeping the codes of Western interiors.

    - This type of painting on canvas belongs to a production traditionally called “painted tapestries”. By this name, we meant paintings imitating tapestries made on textile canvases such as linen.

    - Doubled. Good condition with some wear (see photos, moisture stains, traces of paint at the bottom, tears in the border).
