GIRL’S JACKET. Indonesia, Sumatra, Lampung region, Kauer people, late 19th century.
29.5 x 140 cm.

The kauer live in the mountainous southwest province of Sumatra, on the edge of Bengkulu and Lampung provinces.
In these regions textiles remained powerful symbols of wealth and markers of rank.
So this long-sleeved jacket was worn by young single women during certain ceremonies.
The back features a pattern of interlocking keys framed by a carpet of sewn shells. The open jacket is divided into two indigo panels littered with circular mirrors set with scallops forming the heart of a flower.
the opulence of the materials combined with the diversity of techniques is entirely specific to South Sumatra, which very early on was a rich center of commercial exchange.
A similar cover can be found in Paris at the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts.

The condition remains good, reported various stains and 2 tears on the back, as well as a missing shell. The lining has suffered, so please look carefully at the photos of details which support my point.
