The outfit of a geisha is mainly illuminated with a silk kimono, handcrafted and of great value (it can cost several thousand euros), closed in the back by an obi, a traditional Japanese wide belt. Depending on the age of the geisha, the obi knot is not traditionally done in the same way. The apprentices (maiko) tie their obi in a wide knot which can go up to the shoulder blades and which falls to the ground in a long train. This type of obi is called a darari obi and can measure up to 10 meters long which is the case here for the obi presented.
Experienced geisha wear a shorter obi, called an obi nagoya, without a train and worn in a “drum knot”. The way to tie the geisha obi knot may also vary slightly by region.
Our western customers use these precious textiles to make centerpieces, decorate curtains or any type of interior volume.
