    A CHILD’S HAT WITH A TIGER HEAD, China, late 19th century.

    This child's hat with a tiger head (hutoumao) belongs to the category of animal head hats.
    Worn by little boys, these head coverings have the function of protecting them from malicious spirits who would like to harm them.
    Let us remember, however, that this image is intended to scare ghosts and not humans.
    This hat was probably intended to be worn by a little boy during celebrations such as the New Year.
    The back panel falling over the top of the shoulders, and which serves to protect the child's neck from the wind and cold, tells us that it is a winter hat.
    The comical and joyful aspect of this headgear is reinforced by the multitude of colors and materials used: gold paper, metallic beads, embroidery, golden threads, colored silks and satins...
