Solid silver oil and vinegar cruet from the Consulat / Empire period. Beautiful Egyptian-style decoration with busts of sphinxes with frosted wings, on a finely chased terrace with a frieze of vine branches.
The use of the 1er coq hallmark (1st title, for a 950/1000 silver alloy) allows us to reduce the manufacturing period to 1798-1809. Contemporary with the title hallmark are the Association des orfèvres hallmark and the grosse garantie de Paris hallmark, as well as the JBN hallmark of a currently unidentified silversmith. Our piece was subsequently re-stamped with the Vieillard 1er titre de province and the papillon (in use from 1809 to 1838), and from 1838 with the crabe for the removable cups supporting the flasks.
Our oil and vinegar cruet is a fine example of the refined silverware of the late 18th / early 19th century. It is a fine collector's item. It is accompanied by two bottles - oil cruet and vinegar cruet - in Saint Louis crystal, with their stoppers, one of which still bears its original paper label under the base.
All in very good condition, with no missing decoration.
