Georg JENSEN (born August 31, 1866, Raadvad, Denmark, died October 2, 1935, Copenhagen), was an internationally renowned Danish goldsmith and designer who became known for his commercial application of modern metal design. The simple elegance of his works and his emphasis on fine craftsmanship are recognized around the world.
his beginnings
Jensen was apprenticed to a goldsmith when he was 14 years old. His artistic talents were briefly devoted to sculpture, but he resumed working in metal, mainly jewelry and silver coins, produced in the workshop he opened in Copenhagen in 1904. Jensen exhibited his works in several major foreign salons (winning a gold medal at the Brussels exhibition of 1910) and quickly built a reputation as an exceptional and highly original goldsmith. He moved to a larger workshop in 1912 and acquired his first factory building in 1919.
An artist, sculptor, and goldsmith, Jensen made a name for himself as a ceramist when a pitcher he created, titled “The Maid of the Pot,” was included in the Danish exhibit at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900. He turned to silver and opened a workshop in Bredgade Street in central Copenhagen in 1904. money. Passers-by who liked what they saw could order custom pieces. Two years later, at the age of 40, he moved into his own store and his love affair with silver hollowware began.
