History
Shops were opened in Paris and other major European cities, such as London. Business increased, with flatware being developed substantially along with hol- loware. The hotel sector provided a major source of clients: from the early 20th century Ercuis supplied the top hotels of the Riviera and the Basque coast and the legendary ocean liners of the inter-war years such as the Ile de France, the Normandie and the Ville d’Alger.
Years later in 1962, the last ocean liner owned by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, the France, was equipped by Ercuis. The 1970s marked a turning point in the company’s future: the factory was modernised and designs became more contemporary. Citeaux cutlery is a product of this era. Ercuis became a member of the Comité Colbert (a grou- ping of exclusive French luxury brands) in 1978, bearing witness to its prominence in the French luxury sector. At the same period the company was chosen to sup- ply the Venice Simplon Orient Express, which resumed service in 1977. Ercuis’ line of tableware stamped with the VSOE initials is still used today aboard the legen- dary train which has become symbolic of romanticism and adventure.
