Suite of 11 ebony and sterling silver fruit knives and 1 cheese knife, Restoration period. The blades bear the Vieillard hallmark and the guarantee hallmark used between 1819 and 1838, as well as the JB goldsmith's hallmark under a comtal crown. The knives are in their original case.
This is a very classic early 19th-century model, with ebony handle, solid silver ferrules, blades and inlaid cartouche, easily matching all types of housewares. The cartouche is engraved with the arms of the de la Croix de Castries family, under the Ducal crown. Our knives were probably made for Charles de La Croix (1756-1842), 1st Duke of Castries. The de Castries family included many officers who served France; in the 20th century, General Christian de Castries, who commanded the entrenched camp of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, is remembered.
A fine ensemble, bearing witness to the lifestyle of the high aristocracy in the early 19th century.
Our knives are in good condition, with traces of use and cracks in the handles. The case is not hinged.
Note: we have 6 additional cheese knives (steel blades) to make a set of 18.
