Large and rare egyptomania lounge by Parvis, with 2 2-seater benches and 4 armchairs.
Freely inspired by furniture found in royal tombs or depicted in temples and papyrus, this lounge is richly decorated with cat heads and paws on the arms and legs; virtually every piece of wood is adorned with a bone and wood marquetry.
The backrests are surmounted by a frieze of Uraeus (protective cobras), while those of the sofas are further decorated with profiles of gods and vultures (symbol of the Nekhbet deity), attributes of the Pharaoh.
Good overall condition, some wear and tear, old restorations, fabrics and seats to be revised.
High-quality work by Parvis, the great Italian cabinetmaker, who settled in Cairo in 1859 and drew inspiration from all the architectural and decorative elements he saw throughout Egypt to create his own style of Arabized furniture.
He quickly went on to furnish the finest Egyptian homes, and thanks to his participation in Universal and International Expositions, conquered the European market.
The photos that can still be found in his store bear witness to the profusion of his creations; after the Mamluk taste, he drew his inspiration from the ornamentation and decoration characteristic of ancient Egypt.
Late nineteenth, early twentieth century
