Set of 10 Directoire dining room chairs in mahogany with horsehair covers, Jacob model

<meta charset="UTF-8" />Beautiful set of 10 Etruscan mahogany chairs, mahogany veneer, banded back, baluster front legs and curved back legs. One chair is from the 18th century (Directoire Consulate), the other 9 are identical. According to family tradition, this is the model made by Georges Jacob for Marshal Soult.

Our chairs are typical of the Etruscan style, very fashionable at the end of the 18th century and directly inspired by the excavations of Greco-Roman antiquity, designed by the painter David. Georges Jacob, at the forefront of fashion, was one of the initiators of this new style by creating the first mahogany chairs known as "English style" for the Count of Provence at Versailles. He launched the Etruscan style by designing Etruscan-style furniture in carved mahogany, delivered in 1788 for the dairy at the Château de Rambouillet. These chairs, known as Klismos, were a sophisticated late 18th-century production (the others are perfect copies), produced with an archaeological desire for a true return to antiquity. With its very pure style, this model is a prototype of the new style, a precursor to what would later become the Empire style, the work of a great 18th-century designer. Everything is carefully thought out in terms of proportions, motifs, and decorative elements. Nothing has been left to chance. It is so avant-garde that one might think it was from the Art Deco period.

In excellent condition, our chairs have been completely restored, the mahogany revarnished with a traditional French polish, the horsehair upholstery on webbing, knife-stitched, and covered with genuine horsehair fabric. The ensemble is an excellent blend of modern and classic tastes. The seats are sturdy, durable, and suitable for use as dining room chairs.
