Chair with headband
Beech imitation mahogany
Painted headband
Dimensions : H. ; W. ; D. (cm.)
Paris, circa 1790
Chair on tapered, ringed front legs and saber-shaped back legs. Molded and belted seat, connecting dice with florets. Cut-panel uprights. Curved headband decorated with a very rare antique painted scene.
This chair is one of a small number of mahogany, beech or walnut chairs with painted entablature. These include armchairs and chairs commissioned around 1790 for the Crown and in the apartments of Consul Lebrun in 1800 at the Tuileries; as well as a suite of four armchairs delivered for the Comte de Kerry's mansion on rue d'Artois.
This model was particularly popular in the late 18th century, as a number of paintings can attest. These include
- Portrait of Mlle Duplant, 1793, by François André Vincent (Gulbekian Foundation)
- Portrait of Joachim Le Breton, 1795, by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (Neslon Atkins Museum)
- The famous "Two Young Friends Kissing", circa 1789 - 1793, by Louis-Léopold Boilly (Musée Cognac-Jay)
