This large sofa is a quality seat, as evidenced by the balanced shape and the careful carving. Large in size and unaltered, this three-seater, known as "triple evolution," is a work from Lyon, dating from the Louis XV period.

Made of walnut and beech wood, the woods feature their original ochre-colored finishes.

This sofa rests on eight legs. It features a base found in Lyon on flat-backed armchairs, with a long carved water leaf for the front legs and a simplified equivalent model for the back legs.

The backrest, divided into three sections, shaped like a donkey's back, is carved with flowers and foliage of different sizes and in different positions on rocaille-style backgrounds. This distribution is reflected in the front seat crosspieces, a balanced style typical of Pierre Nogaret.

The armrest brackets are said to be simple bilobed without scrolls. This pattern is found on flat backs by Lyon-based chair joiners such as Canot. It is also found at Nogaret, but more rarely.

The seat side rails feature a triangular-shaped "lug." This "appendage" is considered "exclusive to Nogaret." This characteristic feature is referred to as "a signature by the decoration" in reference works on Nogaret.

Another characteristic feature found on Lyon-based sofas is the curved intermediate posts of the backrest. This carving by the joiner is notably found on a sofa preserved in the collections of the Camondo Museum, which is part of a living room set comprising a sofa and 14 armchairs by Pierre Nogaret. It should also be noted that the flat-backed armchairs in this Nogaret-branded set also feature bilobed armrest brackets, like those found on our sofa.

Given these technical and aesthetic characteristics, this sofa can be attributed to Pierre Nogaret.

There is some wear on the feet at the stoppers, the canework is in good condition, with a small tear on the backrest. The seat is upholstered with a thick cushion with petit point tapestry.

The frame is in very good condition; this chair is usable.

The ochre finish shows some wear and is patinated.
