Rare set of 6 Queen's armchairs with frame. With medallion backs and arm brackets adorned with acanthus leaves, they rest on fluted spindle legs, the crosspieces and top of the back carved with flowers in high relief. Early Louis XVI period, circa 1775-1780. 4 seats stamped Pierre Brizard.

Pierre Brizard, carpenter and sculptor, master in 1772. Born in 1737, he was the younger brother of Sulpice Brizard, maitre in 1762. His output is rare but elegant, mostly in the Louis XVI style. A sculptor in addition to his training as a chair carpenter, Pierre Brizard created his own highly detailed, high-relief sculptures, just like our chairs.

In the 18th century, frame chairs were the most refined form of salon armchair. Their removable upholstery (backrest, armrests, seat), set into a rebate, enabled them to be changed to receive velvet or tapestry for winter and light silk for summer. Our chairs are also characterized by their elegant proportions, in a very "à la grecque" style fashionable at the end of the Louis XV period, which still has some influence on our armchairs, although the overall stylistic repertoire is already very neoclassical. Each seat is unique, with a different flower motif at the top of each backrest. Likewise, the rebates for the frames are unique to each seat. Engraved numbers (for easy reassociation of trim and frame) can be found underneath, up to number 16 for one of our seats. A set of 6 non-separated seats is rare enough, but when you realize that they were originally a set of at least 16 identical seats, you can imagine the size and wealth of the château or hôtel particulier from which they originally came.

Our chairs are in excellent condition, having probably been reupholstered 100 years ago, around 1900. Traditional horsehair upholstery. For the cover, we chose to upholster them in new pineapple silk damask by Tassinari et Chatel. A prestigious fabric for unusual seating, in the Louis XVI style but still with a hint of Louis XV influences. It's a choice that could have been found in one of the great collections of the early 20th century (Cognacq-Jay, Jacquemard André, Rotschild or Camondo).

    A fine amateur set.
