A great design classic from the 1950s and popularized in the 1970s, a Papasan chair, otherwise known as a “bowl chair” or “moon chair” is a type of bowl-shaped chair, with an adjustable angle. The bowl rests in a vertical frame traditionally made of rattan, but also sometimes made of wicker or sturdy wood. The chair cushion is usually thick velor filled with cotton down similar to that of a futon. For traditional papasans, the cushion can be removed and used outside of its sturdy frame. The papasan chair gained popularity in the West when American servicemen in World War II brought them back from the Far East, where they had been used especially in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan for centuries.
