Elegant pair of cabriolet bergères, lacquered and gilded wood decorated with flowers. A handsome model with generous proportions; the higher-than-usual backrest gives them all their elegance. They are upholstered in precious emerald-green silk velvet with a floral motif, enhanced by gilded braiding. Parisian work of the Louis XV period, one of the two bergères bears the stamp of Louis Delanois.
Louis Delanois (1731-1792), mastered on July 27, 1761, was one of the greatest chair carpenters of the 18th century. His clientele was particularly brilliant, including the Comte d'Artois and the Prince de Condé for Chantilly and the Palais Bourbon, and the Duc de Chartres and the Comtesse du Barry for their apartments in Versailles and for Louveciennes. He also supplied King Stanislas II of Poland for the Warsaw Palace.
From 1750 onwards, with the discovery of the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, he was responsible for a number of highly avant-garde creations marked by the renewal of forms and decors. Although the majority of his work is made up of Louis XV chairs, Delanois played a key role in the evolution of the styles of the period, and more specifically in the early formation of the Louis XVI style in the reign of Louis XV. The medallion backrest, very much in vogue during the reign of Louis XVI, is said to have been invented by Delanois.
For the restoration, we chose to cover these beautiful armchairs with silk velvet embossed with floral motifs by Tassinari et Chatel. A fine restoration by our upholsterer, who reupholstered these lovely rocaille chairs with "bien grasse" upholstery to give them a more comfortable feel. The wood was formerly lacquered and gilded (gilding worn).
A fine amateur's set.
