    Rare desk armchair attributed to Jacob Frères* in mahogany and mahogany veneer, concave back, carved ram heads on the armrests, double baluster front legs and saber back legs, from the First Empire period, early 19th century.
    This armchair is in good condition and of exceptional quality. The upholstery is later (a little worn).
    The carved ram heads at the ends of the armrests are a particularity of the late Directoire-early Empire period (as are the lion or leopard heads) (Cf "le Siège français" by Jarry and Devinoy).
    Please note: cracks and traces of restoration on the two rear legs (see last photos), some scratches and minor dents on the mahogany (particularly on the bottom of the front legs), age-related wear, please look at the photos.
    * Jacob :
    Georges Jacob is the most famous and prolific of all 18th-century French chair joiners. From the reign of Louis XV to the Consulate, he produced an incalculable number of seats of all kinds and styles, as well as a number of pieces of furniture. His rich clientele included the royal family. Georges Jacob's work is immense. In terms of quantity, quality, diversity and innovation, this master is a true trailblazer (excerpt from "Le mobilier français du XVIIIè" by P.Kjellberg).
    JACOB. Dynasty of joiners and cabinetmakers active from the reign of Louis XV to the Restoration. Georges (1739- 1814) was awarded his master's degree in 1765, and produced a number of chairs, first Rocaille, then Neo-Classical. Georges Jacob Fils (1768-1803) and his brother François-Honoré (1770-1841) continued the family business on rue Meslée during the Directoire period. François-Honoré added the Desmalter name to his own after the death of his elder brother. In collaboration with the painter David, Jacob Desmalter creates new models inspired by antiquity, supplying the Imperial Court. His son Georges Alphonse served the Restoration.
