Claude Gorgu (received master on July 18, 1770)
Pair of cabriolet armchairs, medallion backs
White relacquered beech
Stamped on the front crosspiece of one.
Inventory numbers on the back
Paris circa 1780
Dimensions : H. ; D. ; W. (cm.)
Elegant pair of armchairs on tapered, turned, fluted legs, curved seat, medallion back, molded belt, back, armrests and armrest supports. Pastille-decorated connecting dice.
This pair of armchairs is typical of Parisian production at the end of the Ancien Régime. The material (beech), the style (abundant fluting and molding) and the finish (off-white lacquer) are all typical.
The beautiful proportions of this pair make them ideal, for example, to sit on either side of an 18th-century chest of drawers, secretary or console table.
Claude Gorgu
A carpenter producing meticulous models, he practiced for some twenty years, first in the Cour de la Juiverie, then in Rue du Gindre.
An example of flying furniture
Our medallion armchairs perfectly illustrate the distinction between "mobilier meublant" and "mobilier volant". Furnishing furniture, with its flat back, is designed to stay in place. Our seats, with their cabriolet backs, are part of the flying furniture category, which can be moved at will to play, have tea or lounge. Our armchairs encapsulate an iconic design whose shape is still being reworked by Philippe Starck and his famous Louis Ghost armchair in the 21st century.
Condition report: superb work by our upholsterer. Joinery with no gaps, seats and backrests refurbished using the traditional method (horsehair on webbing) and covered in thick cotton velvet with superb reflections. Matching new trimmings.
