Pierre Nogaret (1718 - August 23, 1771)
Chair joiner. Master in 1745 in Lyon.
Lyon's most famous joiner. These works, almost all in carved and varnished walnut, decorated with flowers and rocaille or ribbons and linked rushes, are stamped "NOGARET A LYON" with the leg of the "Y" folding to the left.
The lines of his creations, emphasizing the movement of the silhouette, give them an alert rhythm like no other.
Pierre Nogaret was born in Paris in 1718, and remained the undisputed master of the Lyonnais chair under the reign of Louis XV. Unlike his colleagues Riesener and Jacob, there is no portrait of this illustrious cabinetmaker, who was the "faceless" craftsman, a veritable myth identified solely with his work.
It is thought, however, that after an apprenticeship in Paris, probably with a great master, he left the capital in 1743 to settle in Lyon, where he continued his training with Lyon master François Girard.
He obtained his master's degree in Lyon in 1745. From 1745 to 1761. He does not seem to have been much involved in the life of his guild, of which he was only elected master-guard with Mathieu Lerbet on February 9, 1771.
He died on August 23 of the same year and was buried in the "cave de Saint-Roch".
His stamp
Nogaret's stamp appears as a line of small capitals (47mm x 2.2mm), and the shape of the Lyon Y shows a highly characteristic layout, with the leg folding horizontally to the left.
The forgeries are based on reference works such as Comte de Salverte's, Pierre Verlet's (1955) and Jean Nicolay's (1959), all of which, to varying degrees, show a clear error on the "Y".
The location of the de Nogaret stamp seems to have been rigorously coded.
On caned flat-back seats, the stamp is located on the rear crossmember of the frame,
on embossed flat-back seats, it's on the rear crossmember of the belt,
on cabriolets, on the backrest upright at the assembly point,
on gilded wood frame seats, on a crosspiece inside the belt frame.
