Large Virgin and Child in painted wood and carved in hollow on the back, representing the Virgin and Child.
The theme of the Virgin and Child is the most represented in all Christian art, while the childhood of Jesus is almost completely eluded by the canonical evangelists. This representation is probably the result of a realization of an archaic theme (Isis breastfeeding Harpocrates, the child Horus).
We thus find many representations of the "woman and child" in most cultures of the world, including in pre-Christian Europe. .
Very beautiful presence, also due to the height (1.20m). The Virgin is richly dressed, her neck surrounded by a double-row coral necklace. The position is hieratic, while the attitude of Jesus is rather facetious...
Resumed in polychromy, as is often the case in German sculpture, two fingers of Christ remade
Southern Germany, probably Swabia, but perhaps Tyrol, 16th century.
