Carved and polychromed wood Trinity in the round, back partially hollowed out.
It is represented here as a "Throne of Grace". In this original formula, which probably originated in France in the 12th century, God the Father holds his Son before him. From the 13th century onwards, the Son's body rests on the Father's lap, in an arrangement inspired by the Pietàs.
This was in response to a mystical desire to express the Father's pain more forcefully.
Bavaria ,or Swabia, spätgotik ,circa 1550
A few changes to the original polychromy, but very reasonable.
