Standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on a lotiform base, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, late 19th / early 20th century.
His posture is natural, and his serene face evokes a slight smile. The intensity of her gaze is particularly striking, as her eyes are made of glass.
The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with inclusions of glass or mica (mineral), and the Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. In his right hand, he holds the fruit of the myrobolan tree, an allusion to Buddha's healing powers.
Provenance: Estate of dealer and collector Claude de Marteau.
