Large, magnificent statue of St. John the Baptist, early 18th century, in finely carved oak.
Back sketched out, standing with a lamb at his feet (known attribute of St. John the Baptist).
He is dressed in a cloak whose flaps are folded down to the front
and carries a pouch slung over his shoulder.
    Some traces of polychromy.
Cross or shepherd's crook missing in left hand.

St. John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin, and it was he who baptized Jesus at his request
in the waters of the Jordan.
In biblical tradition, he is the greatest of the prophets,
He reveals the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.
The lamb depicted next to St. John the Baptist is
the image of Jesus, the Lamb of God.

This statue, in all its authenticity, reflects the peaceful, lively and luminous force
that the sculptor wished to portray.
The richness of expression and finesse of this work of art is striking.
