Carved softwood group depicting Saint Anne the Trinity. Worked in high relief, this group was intended to be affixed to the wall of a chapel or altarpiece.
Originating in the Eastern tradition, this iconography developed in Europe after the Crusades, and intensified in the Christian West from the mid-14th century.
The theme is represented mainly in sculpture and painting, and its iconographic features are always intended to signify the physical dependence of Mary and Jesus on Anne. As with our sculpture, these representations take on an anti-naturalistic character, with Mary depicted as barely older than Jesus.
Abandoned in France and Italy in the early 16th century, this iconographic theme continued throughout the 17th century in the countries of the Holy German Empire.
Germanic countries, circa 1600.
Formerly polychromed, our sculpture has a beautiful patina.
Good condition; note an accident to the baby Jesus' right hand.
