Religious statue in polychrome carved wood representing Saint-Just* de Beauvais with his right arm outstretched and his head almost decapitated in blood, from the late 17th-early 18th century.
This statue is in good general condition. The polychromy is a little damaged but it is still vivid.
A note: some accidents, gaps, cracks and wear on the wood and the polychromy, old wormholes, look at the photos.
* Saint-Just:
according to a passion of the VIIIth century, it is about a child of 9 years, martyr in Sinomovicus, close to Beauvais. Saint-Just had left Auxerre, with his father, to deliver his uncle, captive in Amiens. Pursued on the way back, the father and the uncle hide while the child exposes himself to danger alone. He is then beheaded. The place of the martyr is located in Sinomovicus (Saint-Just en Chaussée). When the father and the uncle come out of their hiding place, they see the corpse sitting with its head on its knees. The tongue then begins to speak: it is addressed to God, but also to the companions of the child, who are responsible for bringing the head back to the mother, who has remained in Auxerre. This story is at the origins of cephalophoria. (Excerpt from the Great Book of Saints, Worship and Iconography in the West by Jacques Baudoin)
