Rare 14th century sculpture of Saint Bartholomew (or Bartholomew). Spain (Leon or Castile). This type of sculpture can be found as early as the 12th century. Production may have continued into the early 15th century.
The Roman Breviary (taking up ancient traditions), relates that during a journey by this apostle of Christ to the ends of the world (India), the paines heard their idol Berith complain "Our god is bound in chains of fire, he dares neither breathe nor speak, from the moment God's apostle Bartholomew entered".
The sculptor has depicted the defeated demon at his feet, chained to the holy book in his hand, in a visually clear symbolism.
The saint's hieratic appearance contrasts with the demon's rather mutinous face (which makes him quite human in the end...).
This touching depiction of the victory of Good over Evil has a lovely presence.
Missing are the demon's right arm (presumably performing the sign of blessing) and feet.
79cm high
