This bold and beautiful sculpture depicts a woman's face at the center of a radiance of hair .
The rare quality of the carving rules out a work of folk art .
The hair work is a feat of comb carving .
The perfectly crafted face, too, is modeled on the mascarons of the Regency period, and even on the console protuberances of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, for example.
It is therefore impossible to date this French or European work for its extreme quality, independently of its artistic presence.
As root wood is made of tightly-woven fibers that do not crack, it cannot be dated either.
The roots have been pegged together to keep their radiating shape, which is another asset of the artist's skill.
An excellent sculptor with classical knowledge would have created this beautiful feminine "sun" with a mythological or even ethnic spirit.
Condition:
Very good condition, simply waxed and polished.
