Founded by Thadomin Paya in 1364[1], Ava was the capital of the Kingdom of Ava in the 14th and 15th centuries. Endowed with religious buildings imitating those of Pagan, if not in size and wealth, it sees the golden age of Burmese culture, before being conquered by the Shans in 1527.
Ava regained its status as a capital under the Second Taungū Dynasty, from 1635 to 1752.
It was again the capital twice, under the Konbaung dynasty from 1764 to 1783, then from 1823 to 1841, when an earthquake devastated it.
