This nurturing pelican is a touching allegory of the Eucharist. A symbol of Christ, it is often enthroned on altarpiece canopies and regularly depicted on tabernacle fronts.
A late 16th or early 17th century polychrome gilded wood subject stylizing a pelican with its wings outstretched and opening its chest with its beak.

The pelican symbolizes paternal love, the bird here piercing its breast with its beak to feed its young with its flesh and blood, and by extension, it represents Christic love.

Dimensions 43 cm by 50 cm. Good condition, but with minor wear and tear - base attached.
