Large statue of the Virgin and Child Jesus, 16th century, polychrome walnut, total height with base 116 cm.
Note repainting and restorations, woodworm attack (treated recently), recent custom-built base.
Superb medieval folk art statue, note the straight folds in the lower part of the dress and the bird's beak in the mantle, the child holding the Bible in a frontal position, as in the Virgin Majesties. We're at the transition between these 2 styles, the child presented from the front in the Middle Ages and from the 17th century onwards, when he's glued to the mother's side and presented at an angle. Also typical of this period are the square neckline, the peasant bonnet, the S-shaped hairstyle framing Mary's face and Jesus' long hair in a helmet, and the slight smile typical of the Virgins of the Middle Ages, whether in painting or sculpture.
As the statue is a rather tall and heavy prestige object, it will be shipped by specialized carrier.
A certificate of authenticity dated 2021 by François de Lavaissiere, a medieval expert, will be enclosed.
