The cerofer is the "candle bearer". Altar servers called acolytes usually carry the candle. Together, they open the processions, preceded or followed by the incense bearers. These acolytes physically present during the ceremonies during the Gospels, are sometimes represented, on either side of the Altar, by two statues. They manifest the Light of Christ that the celebrations diffuse.

Our pair of altar angels is in polychrome carved wood. Standing on a triangular plinth decorated with winged cherub heads, they are dressed in the Roman style and hold a cornucopia ending in a candle holder in their left hand. The right hand on the heart, they face each other tenderly.

An 18th century Northern Italian work.
