The historical Buddha Sakyamuni in the position of taking the earth as witness to his victory over the demon Mara, the bhumisparsha mudra.
Burma (Myanmar), Shan princely states, late 18th century.
H 90 cm x W 53 cm x D 26 cm
A very fine example of an early Buddha image indicating the junction of several influences:
Ava (14th/18th century): The face becomes rounder and leaves its angular forms, although they are still slightly perceptible. The austere expression begins to soften, but not as much as in later periods.
Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885): The eyebrows no longer stretch towards the temples, but are arched. The overall posture is still carefully sober, but not as luxurious as it would become during the Mandalay period. Black lacquer dominates the whole work, entirely on the body.
Mandalay (1857-1885/1948): The throne features a double row of stylized lotus petals, heralding the emerging influence of the Mandalay style, as do the red repaints. Exactly the same treatment can be seen on this piece.
Provenance: Estate of Asian art collector and dealer Claude de Marteau
Sold with certificate of provenance.
