Leaning on a tree trunk, his shoulder covered with a Panther skin, a young fawn completes his flute piece. Inspired by an original bronze dating from the 4th century BC, and following in the footsteps of the creations of Praxiteles and Lysippus the Antique, its Roman copy in the Borghese collection enjoyed great renown from the 17th century, when it was copied for King Louis XI. It was then purchased by Napoleon 1st in 1807 and exhibited at the central museum in 1815. The antique was widely admired and reproduced throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Here, to preserve 19th-century decency, we took the liberty of using panther skin as a modesty veil.
our terracotta is in good overall condition, with some restoration to the flute. A few small chips to the patina.
Louis Gossin ( 1846-1928 )
