Beige ceramic representation of a priest

Mexico
Veracruz culture, 450 - 750 A.D.

The figure is depicted standing, arms and legs outstretched, with the palm of his right hand turned skyward and his left palm facing the listener. He is adorned with two large necklaces, each adorned with a massive pectoral, and three bells on his legs, the latter showing traces of chapopote (bitumen). He is dressed in a small loincloth tied at the waist with a belt, both signified by the pastillage technique. The oversized oval face features lenticular eyes framing an eagle-beak nose above a wide, half-open mouth with full lips. The elaborate hairstyle features a triple row of feather-like truncated cones topped by a crest, with the ears adorned with large tubular tambas (ear ornaments).
