    Biography:
    Fidel Aguilar Marco 1894 / 1917
    Aguilar Marco, Fidel. 1894 / 1917
    Gerona, Escultor.

He was born in Girona on 20 July 1894. After a brief stay at the seminary, he entered a sculptor's workshop and, at the age of sixteen, he created a woodcarving and furniture restoration workshop with a partner. Although he attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Girona, as a sculptor he is considered self-taught.

His premature death, at the age of twenty-two, put an end to a production full of hope, becoming an almost mythified figure, especially in the artistic field of Girona.

Despite his short biography, he was closely linked to the so-called Noucentisme and, more specifically, to the Athenaeum Society of Girona, an entity that became the centre of cultural activities in his hometown and was an authentic "Noucentista" home.

Thus, Aguilar's work is characterized by its Mediterranean references, by a vitalism in the vein of Rodin, by a certain parallelism with the work of Bourdelle and Maillol and by a particular decorativeism close to that of the sculptor Julio Antonio. He made statuettes in wood, stone, plaster and terracotta, to which he gave an oxidized bronze patina.

Of particular note is a series of heads that Aguilar sculpted in Girona stone shortly before his death, in which references to the world of archaic Greece are evident.

His drawings, very voluminous, and his contributions as a furniture sculptor also deserve attention.

He collaborated closely with the architect, also from Girona, Rafael Masó.

From 1919, the Marcó ceramic factory, located in Quart d'Onyar (Girona), began the commercial exploitation of his works.

In 1930, the city of Girona erected a monument dedicated to Fidel Aguilar, financed by popular subscription and located in what is known as the Parque de la Devesa.
