Terracotta sculpture of a horse being struck down by a snake, 20th century.
The complexity of the horse's anatomy makes it a favorite subject for artists. All the more so when it comes to depicting its ardor, as is the case with the terracotta sculpture shown here.
Here, the horse is depicted wrestling with a snake wrapped around its belly and breast. The animal's tense body, neighing, head raised to the sky and protruding ribs suggest that the reptile is tightening its grip to suffocate its prey, and is about to sink its fangs into its neck.
The highly expressive modeling and naturalistic details enhance the realism of the struggle between the two animals. The sculptor's terracotta work is of the highest quality.
The sculpture is signed on the floor near the horse's rump. Further testimony to the artist's skill, the terracotta bears traces of modelling, a direct evocation of the sculptor's meticulous gestures, reinforcing the uniqueness of the work.
Well-preserved, with one restoration to be noted (see photos).
