Rare pair of large polychrome earthenware sculptures (majolica) signed WS&S for Wilhelm Schiller & Sons*, depicting two gypsy children seated on columns, the little girl holding a tambourine and holding out her hand to beg, the little boy playing the flute, from Austria, late 19th-early 20th century. These sculptures are in good condition and of exceptional quality. Their large size makes them highly decorative. Signed under the columns and numbered under the children. The sculptures stand on the columns (wires were added later to link the two). Please note: the girl's column is a little unscrewed, accidents and breaks at the top of the girl's column, small accident and missing cymbalette on the tambourine (the one under her elbow), small firing defect on the boy's pants, the flute (which can be removed) has been broken and glued back on, small chips on the boy's column, a few other chips on the edges of the base of the columns, age-related wear, take a good look at the photos (cf. red arrows). * Wilhelm Schiller & Sons:
In 1829, the Schiller & Gerbing majolica factory was founded in Bodenbach, in the Bela district. Schiller & Gerbing specialized in high-quality, neo-Baroque and even Victorian majolica pieces. The decoration is highly charged. They have now become relatively rare, majolica being a rather fragile material. In 1885, Wilhelm Schiller left the company and, with his son Eduard, founded the Wilhelm Schiller und Sohn (WS & S) factory, still in Bodenbach but in another district, Obergrund. The Wilhelm Schiller und Sohn factory operated from 1885 to 1914. For much of its life, the factory carried on the tradition of Victorian majolica, like Gerbing and Stephan, producing pieces very similar to those of this other factory. From around 1905 onwards, Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn began to produce pieces much more influenced by Art Nouveau and Secession: simplification of forms, use of plant motifs. Its closure was triggered by the First World War, as the number of workers involved in the conflict was too great to keep the factory running.
