* Villanis Emmanuel (1858-1914):
born of Italian parents, he worked in France and exhibited at the Salon from 1886. Strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau spirit, he produced countless subjects, mostly female figures. Most were executed in bronze and variously tinted metal, often in several sizes, or even in several versions. However, before 1914, he exhibited only one bronze, "Judith" (1898), and a number of plaster casts at the Salon. Numerous bronze proofs signed by de Villanis appear in the trade and at public sales. Many of the statuettes evoke music. The stamp of the Société des bronzes de Paris frequently appears on them. (extract from Les bronzes du XIXème siècle, by P.Kjellberg).
Made mainly in bronze, his sculptures subtly bear the hallmarks of Art Nouveau, including the title lettering, which regularly adorns the base. His play on patinas further enhances the finesse of his lines, making Villanis one of the major sculptors of Art Nouveau. As far as bronze casting was concerned, he worked mainly with the Société des Bronzes de Paris and Eugène Blot.

** Galatea
In Greek mythology, the story of Pygmalion and Galatea refers to a legend about the sculptor Pygmalion who falls in love with his creation, Galatea, a statue brought to life by Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who understands Pygmalion's wish. The legend is mainly recounted by Ovid in his Metamorphoses.
