Marie-Thérèse-Louise de Savoie-Carignan, known as Mademoiselle de Carignan or Madame de Lamballe, was born at the Carignan Palace on September 8, 1749, and died in Paris on September 3, 1792.
A princess of the House of Savoy, she became Princess de Lamballe through her marriage to Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, son of Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon, grandson of Louis XIV.
Married in 1767, she was widowed the following year at the age of eighteen.
She became friends with the future queen Marie-Antoinette, then dauphin, and was appointed superintendent of the Queen's household.
Although she was replaced by Gabrielle de Polignac in the sovereign's affections, she remained devoted to Marie-Antoinette, now Queen of France, for which she paid with her life.
Having followed the royal family after the day of August 10, 1792, she was incarcerated shortly afterwards in La Force prison.
The princess met a dramatic end during the September massacres.
In good condition, a few scratches and chips from use, late 19th century.
