A souvenir of the grand tour
Iconography linked to archaeological discoveries was a popular theme for Italian artists in the 19th century. Mostly intended for the English and French, these small objects were intended to be taken to neighboring countries as a reminder of the trip to Italy. There is a whole range of production linked to this voyage, such as small mosaics, marble busts and so on.
Local bronzemakers and sculptors, in Naples for Pompeian finds, and in Rome and Florence for Etruscan finds, produced a profusion of these models.
