Pakistan / Gandhara region
2nd - 4th century AD
Representation of Vajrapani standing with a slight sway, his athletic body in the manner of a Hercules, his torso naked, his waist girded with a cloth. He rests barefoot on an ovoid base surmounted by a row of lotus petals. The left arm is detached from the body and rests on the thigh, the right arm originally holding a vajra. The head has a long beard and wavy hair, a long lock of hair falling on the left shoulder.
At the crossroads of the civilizations of Iran, the Greek world, India and the nomadic civilizations, Gandhara constituted for sixteen centuries an almost obligatory passageway for the caravans that linked the West to China. A Hellenistic background maintained by the trade in luxury goods exported from the Mediterranean basin, blends with Parthian and Indian influences to the benefit of a Buddhist iconography of great sensitivity.
