Grey stoneware sculpture of a child's face or putto.
- The face is rendered highly expressive by finely sculpted details, such as the mouth, with its hemmed lips that hint at a smile, and the hollowed corners of the mouth offering a corner of shadow before the light catches the generous bounce of the cheeks.
The friendly expression of this chubby face, so characteristic of putti, is reinforced by its small, upturned nose and large, almond-shaped eyes. The forehead is unobstructed, but the hair is long enough to appreciate the delicate work on the waves.
- This child's head can be compared with the Baurscheit workshop. Jan Pieter Baurscheit the Elder (1669-1728) and his son Baurscheit the Younger (1699-1768) were responsible for a large production of secular sculptures, notably of children, or putti, which were extremely popular in the homes of wealthy merchants.
- Sculpture mounted on a black lacquered wood base.
- Very good condition, with slight scratches and small superficial rings on the skin.
- Early 18th century, Netherlands
- Height off base: 20cm
Height with base: 25.5cm
